Complications in small animal surgery

Specialist in Small Animal Surgery
Unfortunately every surgical case carries with it a risk of complications. While most of these are minor and can be easily remedied, recognising potential hazards before, during or after surgery can help to reduce the incidence of serious complications to a minimum. This may involve assessing the patient for concurrent illnesses or injuries, carefully scrutinising radiographs or laboratory results, or simply knowing the likely pitfalls for the case in hand. When complications do occur, early recognition that a case is not progressing as expected can allow rapid action to be taken that may prevent more serious problems from developing.
This talk will look at a range of pre-, intra-, and post-operative complications, from the minor to the catastrophic. Risk factors encountered in a variety of soft tissue and orthopaedic cases will be identified and suggestions made for avoiding the problems commonly encountered in small animal practice. Finally, strategies for coping when cases start to go wrong, along with identification of complications that may require referral or are beyond salvage, will be discussed. Interactive cases will be presented for you to cast your electronic vote!
