Increase in pet thefts

According to the Dog Lost helpline 20 to 30 dogs a day were reported as missing in 2011. This is double the number reported in 2010. The current economic climate is thought to be a potential cause in the sharp increase, with pedigree dogs being resold for many hundreds of pounds.

British Heart Foundation benefits from Willows’ new ‘Assistance Dog’

Willows spent rather more than usual on a stuffed-toy dog recently, in fact he cost in excess of £2000!. Other than vaguely resembling an Airedale Terrier, he is also a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) mannequin, an invaluable training aid for all clinical staff. The mannequin is similar to the well known ‘Resuss Annie’, used to teach life saving First Aid in humans, but with many additional features...

My dog is coughing – could it be Kennel Cough?

Coughing is something that we quite commonly encounter in our canine patients, but it can be very worrying for owners.  If your dog is coughing, it is important that you take him or her to your vet for an examination.  There is a long list of causes of coughs, some of which are more serious than others, so careful history taking and examination by the vet are needed to decide if further investigations and possible treatment are required (looking for heart and lung problems or other non-infectious airway disease).  However, the most common cause of a dog developing a sudden onset cough, especially at this time of year is an upper airway infection known as ‘kennel cough’.
